For I know the plans I have for you, declares the Lord, plans to prosper you and not to harm you, plans to give you hope and a future. Then you will call upon me and come and pray to me, and I will listen to you. You will seek me and find me when you seek me with all your heart.
Sunday School
Sunday school is the nursery of our church, where the new generation is given the essential training and care to confirm them in Christ. Since childhood is the right time to inculcate these values, our Church is giving high priority to the Sunday school ministry. It mainly focuses on the spiritual nurturing of children by bringing them up in the knowledge and fellowship of Jesus Christ our Lord and the Church.
Faith comes by hearing the Word of God
Sunday school is conducted regularly after the Holy Qurbana with prayer & devotional songs. Our Sunday school teachers aim to conduct Bible studies in a fun and engaging way, for our children to learn & live as loving examples of Christ.
Prayer meetings
Nowadays, pastors emphasize church growth by focusing on successful strategies for understanding their surrounding culture and target audience and examining their congregations to determine their strengths and weaknesses. What follows is an arduous process of changing the culture of a church to reflect the new methodologies in order to fulfil its mission. The process of changing a church’s culture involves giving people a heart for evangelism, being sensitive to new people so their target audience can be reached, and empowering the congregation to have ownership of the new vision.
When the people of God come together and engage in prayer inspired by the Holy Spirit the following takes place:
- They receive God's heart for the lost, for the church's vision and mission, and they receive the strategies from God that will work to reach their communities.
- If churches would allow God to download His heart, burden, and vision for their communities, we would experience the kind of impact we read about in the Book of Acts.
Our church members meet on the first Friday and the third Friday of all months. The details of the prayer meeting are sent via the email or can be viewed here.
Martha Mariam Vanitha Samajam
This is one of the major spiritual organizations of the church combining all the Parish womenfolk. The primary goal of this Samajam is the spiritual progress of the women in our church. The group gets together regularly after the Holy Qurbana. It starts with prayer and intercession of Saint Mary followed by devotional songs, bible readings and group discussions.
This Samajam works for the spiritual, ecclesiastical, social and cultural progressiveness of our Parish women. Some of the key objectives of this Samajam are as follows:
- To encourage their family and friends to attend Church and Prayer meetings regularly
- To enhance spirituality by practising family prayers and observing canonical Lents.
- To encourage women to actively participate in the Sunday school Program of the parish in bringing up children in Christ
- To Pray for the sick and visit those who are confined in the hospitals.
- To engage in charity work at home and abroad
Kudumba Units
Family units are formed to enlighten members and their children about the traditional, inherited faith and customs of a Jacobite Syrian Orthodox belief. It's therefore essential for our church to be involved in the wellbeing of every member to guide them into the true faith, family prayer and holy mass. The family units aim at family friendship and sharing of Christ eternal or the divine love and provide an opportunity to study the Holy Bible.
The St Mary's Jacobite Syrian Orthodox Church, Adelaide has four Kudumba Units as listed below
- Mar Baselios (Northern Suburb)
- St. Marys (North Eastern Suburb)
- St. George (Western Suburb)
- Mor Gregorios (Southern Suburb)
Youth Association
Don't let anyone look down on you because you are young, but set an
example for the believers in speech, in life, in love, in faith and in purity
This association is primarily committed to assisting all youth within the parish to be empowered to live and promote model Christian lives.
In a larger perspective, our Youth Association provides avenues for all the youth of this church to meet and interact with each other in an encouraging spiritual environment. Though a small growing group, it takes a keen interest in organizing social functions, carols & family picnics.
He gives strength to the weary and increases the power of the weak. Even youths grow tired and weary, and young men stumble and fall; but those who hope in the LORD will renew their strength. They will soar on wings like eagles; they will run and not grow weary, they will walk and not be faint
Church Choir
Let us come before the Lord with thanksgiving and praise Him with music and song
Our choir is an integral part of our worship which leads the congregation throughout the service by making it more spiritually elevating, melodic and euphonious with the beautiful hymns of the Orthodox Syrian tradition. It is very much dedicated to preserving and perpetuating the (liturgical) musical heritage and tradition of the church and pass on to the younger generation.
Speak to one another with psalms, hymns and spiritual songs, sing and make music in your hears to the Lord, always giving thanks to God the Father for everything in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ
